Today marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of the signing of the Ordinance of Secession for South Carolina. The 2 bottom photos are of the original which was on display today in the Charleston Museum.
Now being a Southerner and especially a South Carolinian, I have had the opportunity/benefit of being educated with our history as it actually occurred and not how it is generally taught....through Politically Correct colored glasses. I could spend much time discussing the War of Northern Aggression and slavery, etc... but I will not. I will only say that the Late Unpleasantness was as much about slavery as invading Iraq was about weapons of mass destruction. Sure, it was a part of it but not nearly as big a part as most students are led to believe. If you doubt, ask yourself this as a primer. What are most wars about? Money and power! And the things that give, grant, or otherwise garner that money and power.
Regardless, South Carolinians like myself have a code very similar to the Marine Corps (code). Family (Unit), South Carolina (Corp), Jesus Christ (God), USA (Country). If some force, foreign or domestic invades my Motherland, then HELL YES I will defend her!!
You are a gentleman and a scholar, sir. Enjoyed your post. I agree with you that wars are about money and power and everything else is just the context the war was fought in. Unfortunately, truth doesn't always fit the political narrative. Merry Christmas to you and yours. -Ben
